A local favorite is the Moose Creek Trail. It’s easy to reach. Hang a right on the main highway heading towards Jackson and then east on Moose Creek Road. This is a terrific hike for families with young children or anyone who wants a mellow trek into the Teton Mountains. It’s also a great way for out-of-towners to gather their sea legs so to speak, given the mountains higher altitudes and unfamiliarity with the terrain.
The elevation gain is barely noticeable on the first section of this trail, with the turn-around about 1 & ½ miles in. Moose Creek Trail is part of the Jedediah Smith Wilderness so closed to motorized vehicles and bicycles. This only adds to the peaceful environment and relaxing nature of this particular jaunt. It’s quite shaded on this trail and there’s always a great chance you’ll see wildlife, especially moose. This is also a terrific choice for the more seasoned hiker. When the flat part of the hike ends, you’ll have choices to make, but all routes from here become noticeably steeper, but still on the more moderate scale. At this point you can venture into the mountains as far as your legs will carry you. Be sure to pack your camera, sunscreen, snacks and plenty of water. Happy hiking!
